Now anyone can access the IEEE’s National Electrical Safety Code® (NESC) from the palm of their hands, anytime, anywhere, from almost any handheld mobile device, with the new NESC Mobile Download.
Exclusively published by IEEE, the NESC is a comprehensive set of practical rules and guidelines for safeguarding electrical installation, operational, and maintenance personnel, in addition to the general public.
Judy Gorman, Managing Director of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) called the NESC Mobile Download “a blueprint for future IEEE Standards Association Mobile Initiatives.” She continued, “Understanding and capitalizing on the potential of new innovations is an inherent part of our DNA. Taking full advantage of mobile technologies on an organization-wide basis is one of our long-term goals.
“We are very pleased to be spearheading this mobile effort” said Michael Hyland, Chair, NESC Committee, and Senior Vice President, Engineering Services, American Public Power Association, “The NESC Mobile Standard is a liberating application – it untethers electrical personnel from the burden of carrying around printed materials, instead delivering instant access to essential, time-critical information, no matter the location or the time of day, via mobile device. By enabling users to quickly search for, find, and reference needed data, the NESC Mobile Standard allows electrical personnel to realize greater levels of efficiency,”
The Mobile version of the NESC will provide immediate, portable access to the full version of the NESC standard from supported mobile devices, including Apple’s iPhone (R) and iPad™, Android ™, BlackBerry™, Palm (R), and Windows Mobile (R). The download is accessed through the popular iSilo Reader™ application, which allows users to easily navigate the NESC Mobile Download and leverage an array of helpful features like bookmarking, search tools and customizable views. Users can even port the Download to a desktop PC.
The iSilo Reader is compatible with any handset, device, and platform supported by iSilo. Both the iSilo Reader and the NESC Mobile download are available for immediate purchase. Regular pricing for the NESC Mobile download is $95 for IEEE Members and Affiliates or $115 for non-members. The iSilo Reader (which is is required for mobile viewing) can be purchased for just $19.99.
With various other initiatives in the planning and production stage, such as new tools and dictionaries, the NESC Mobile Standard is the first in a planned succession of mobile projects. “This is just the beginning of what IEEE Standards Association will be doing in mobile.” says Gorman. IEEE expects to expand its efforts in the mobile arena, eventually rolling out other mobile initiatives across its vast global network of technical councils, societies, and study and working groups.
